A Quick Story About Communication, Accountability, and Doing It Right
There was a situation today that stuck with me.
A customer brought in a sterilizer from a liposuction practice. The issue they described was that the unit was “shorting out” and “not turning on.”
We got it in, tested it, and couldn’t replicate that exact problem.
What we did notice right away was that the display was very dim — hard to read, clearly failing. So we continued testing, trying to recreate the issue they described.
We spent a couple hours on it.
Still couldn’t get it to fail the way it was described.
So we wrote up the estimate based on what we found — a failing display board along with a few other components. The estimate came out to around $1,000.
And that’s where things went sideways.
Where We Came Up Short
Looking back, the miss was simple.
We didn’t stop and call.
We didn’t go back to the customer and say:
“Hey — we’re not seeing it not turn on, but we are seeing this display issue. Can you confirm if this might actually be what you were experiencing?”
Had we done that, there’s a good chance we would’ve aligned right away.
Instead, we pushed forward trying to diagnose based on the original description — and that gap created confusion.
How It Landed
When the customer saw the estimate, they questioned our competency.
That’s not something we hear often.
In fact, I can’t remember the last time someone said that to me directly.
And I’ll be honest — it bothered me.
More than I expected.
I felt it immediately. I wanted to explain, defend, justify. My mouth went dry just standing there having that conversation.
But Here’s The Truth
If I step back and look at it from their side…
I can understand how they got there.
They brought in a unit with one concern, and we came back with something that didn’t clearly connect to what they thought was happening — along with a higher-than-expected estimate.
That disconnect? That’s on us.
What We Believe
At Repair Makers, we take a lot of pride in how we do things.
Not just fixing equipment — but how we communicate, how we show up, and how we guide our customers through decisions.
We’re not perfect.
But we do believe in:
- Being transparent
- Asking the right questions
- Taking the time to understand the full picture
- Owning it when we miss something
Because what we do matters.
Your equipment matters.
Your patients matter.
Your operations depend on it.
The Lesson
This one comes down to something simple:
👉 Don’t assume — confirm.
Even when we think we understand the issue, we need to slow down and make sure we’re aligned before moving forward.
That one extra call can change everything.
Moving Forward
This doesn’t change who we are — it reinforces it.
We’ll keep doing what we’ve always done:
- Take our time
- Be thorough
- Communicate clearly
- Do the job right
And when we miss something, we’ll own it and get better.
Final Thought
If you ever feel like something doesn’t add up — ask us.
We’ll walk through it with you.
That’s part of the job too.
