PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE FOR STERILIZERS – FAQS

General Preventive Maintenance Questions

Preventive maintenance (PM) is a scheduled service designed to keep your sterilizer running at its best. We inspect, test, calibrate, clean, and replace wear parts before they fail. It’s the easiest way to avoid breakdowns, extend your sterilizer’s life, and ensure every load meets sterilization standards.

For most facilities, annual PM is the sweet spot. If your sterilizer runs all day, every day, you may need service every 3–6 months. We can help you set a schedule that matches your usage and manufacturer’s recommendations.

Operators can (and should) handle daily and weekly tasks like wiping down chambers, cleaning trays, and checking gaskets. But full PM—testing, calibration, part replacement—should be handled by a trained tech to make sure it’s done to factory specs.

Absolutely. A small gasket or valve replaced during PM can prevent a costly emergency call and days of downtime. Think of it as cheap insurance for your sterilizer.

Yes—we handle everything from compact dental and medical sterilizers to large freestanding hospital-grade units. We’re factory-trained and trusted for brands like Midmark, Tuttnauer, SciCan, Amsco, Steris, and Getinge.

Midmark Sterilizer Preventive Maintenance

Midmark recommends annual preventive maintenance for normal use. Heavy-use environments may benefit from service every 6 months. This helps prevent common issues like door gasket leaks, slow cycles, and sensor errors.

We’ll check and calibrate temperature and pressure sensors, inspect wiring, replace the door gasket, clean the chamber and filters, and test every cycle for performance. If your unit’s older, we may suggest replacing certain valves or the heating element before they fail.

Yes—if we find an error code during PM, we’ll troubleshoot it on the spot. Many times, preventive maintenance clears the problem before it affects your workflow.

Tuttnauer Sterilizer Preventive Maintenance

Annual PM is ideal for most clinics. During PM, we’ll check the heating element, replace the door gasket, clean the safety valve, and make sure the pressure gauge is accurate.

Yes—lab sterilizers often run at higher loads and temperatures than dental or medical units. We recommend PM every 6 months for the Tuttnauer LabSci 11 to prevent wear on valves, seals, and heaters.

The 3870 is a larger-capacity unit, so we pay extra attention to its door assembly, safety systems, and steam generation components. These units are workhorses, but they perform best when cleaned, calibrated, and tested on a regular schedule.

Definitely. If you have a mix of Tuttnauer units—or a blend of Tuttnauer and other brands—we can service them all in one visit, saving you time and travel costs.

Cost and Scheduling

It depends on your sterilizer type, brand, and service frequency. We offer customized, cost-effective PM quotes so you’re not paying for more than you need. Call us or request a quote online and we’ll put together a plan that works for you.

Both. Some customers prefer a one-time PM each year, while others like the peace of mind of a service agreement that locks in regular visits and priority scheduling.

Absolutely. If your sterilizer needs repair, we can complete the fix and perform PM in the same visit—so you leave with a unit that’s both functional and fully serviced.
